Stone Tool Troubleshooting: "Angle Grinder Gripes"

Are you working through your blades faster than you should, costing your business an unnecessary expense?

There could be a simple change to the way you use your machine that could save you a lot of money!

Check out our troubleshooting guide designed by the technical experts here at Stonegate, to see if we can solve your problem.

Experiencing excessive wear of the segment?

Potential Causes

Our Solution

  • Cutting at a speed too low for the job
  • Using the incorrect blade for the material
  • Insufficient cooling
  • Increase the rotation speed
  • Use a diamond stone cutting blade with a harder metal bond
  • Allow more cooling time
  • Double-check that the blade you're using is correct for the material

Are your segments cracking?

Potential Causes

Our Solution

  • RPM is too high
  • Using the incorrect blade for the material
  • Overheating has caused excessive pressure, resulting in a crack
  • Reduce the rotation speed
  • Replace with a more suitable diamond blade for stone
  • Allow more cooling time between cuts and break during the cut if necessary

Is your segment no longer straight?

Potential Causes

Our Solution

  • This could be due to storing or transporting incorrectly
  • Ensure to store diamond blades (and all tooling and equipment) in a safe manner

Is your segment wearing unevenly?

Potential Causes

Our Solution

  • The machine shaft/bearings could be damaged
  • Improper use
  • Cooling is insufficient or is not being distributed laterally

  • Check the axial and radial clearance on the bearings of the shaft
  • Make sure that the blade is perpendicular to the direction you are cutting
  • Increase the air or water flow to ensure proper cooling

Is your blade body wearing unevenly?

Potential Causes

Our Solution

  • Abrasive fragments beating against the steel sides of the blade.
  • Incorrect blade for the material being cut
  • Incorrect RPM
  • Cooling is insufficient
  • Remove fragments where possible
  • Replace with a more suitable diamond blade for the material.
  • Adjust the rotational speed.
  • Increase the air or water flow to ensure proper cooling.

Is your blade body cracking or breaking?

Potential Causes

Our Solution

  • The impact at the start is too high
  • The RPM is too high
  • The blade has been stored incorrectly
  • Excessive twisting.
  • Cooling is Insufficient

  • Reduce the impact at the start.
  • Reduce the RPM
  • Ensure to store the blade safely
  • Make sure that the blade is perpendicular to the direction you are cutting
  • Increase the air or water flow to ensure proper cooling.

Are you experiencing and uneven rotation or loss of tension?

Potential Causes

Our Solution

  • The blade has been stored incorrectly
  • Excessive twisting
  • Cooling is Insufficient

  • Ensure to store the blade safely
  • Make sure that the blade is perpendicular to the direction you are cutting
  • Increase the air or water flow to ensure proper cooling

The bore is damaged or distorted?

Potential Causes

Our Solution

  • The Flanges are dirty
  • The Flanges have not been adequately tightened
  • Check the Flanges
  • Check that the blade is adequately fitted to the shaft of the machine.
